(BEIJING, Dec. 22, 2005) -- The preparatory work for Beijing Olympic Games has entered full deployment and is making smooth progress, vice-mayor of Beijing and executive vice-president of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) Liu Jingmin said today.
Olympic preparations have become intensive and BOCOG's 500 staff have to work overtime, Liu said in an interview with the Beijing Public Service Radio.
The three Olympic concepts, namely "Green Olympics, People's Olympics, and High-Tech Olympics," are not only the needs of the 2008 Olympiad, but also the fundamental direction of Beijing's development, Liu said, referring to Olympiad's benefits to the public.
Speaking of Olympic volunteers, Liu said that they serve as a great characteristic of the Olympics and that their smile is a "name card" of the host city. According to him, approximately 100,000 volunteers will be recruited to meet the needs of the Games. BOCOG has already launched the Olympic Volunteers Program and unveiled the Volunteers' symbol.
With respect to the Olympic transportation, Liu noted that the local government is making great effort to expand public transport to ease traffic jams, by increasing transport vehicles, adopting new technologies and optimizing transportation lines.
When it comes to the protection of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), Liu said the IPR protection stands as a fundamental measure to ensure the success of the Beijing Olympics.
The Olympic sponsorship Program supports the Olympic Games, at the same time the sponsors are entitled to get rewards, so that BOCOG will protect sponsor's rights. China is a country that keeps its word and the protection of IPR is in the interest of China's long-term economic and trade development, Liu added.

The Olympic Village of the ex "Mercati Generali" (General Markets) is now ready for the Games too. With the delivery of this work to the city of Torino, the Olympic varnishing-days under the Mole come to an end.
And it is an imposing construction, which started in September 2003, stretching over more than 90 thousand square metres in one of the most enchanting areas of the city where, alongside the historical arcades of the original structure - bound by the Monuments and Fine Arts Office - 52 thousand square metres of residences develop along with 750 apartments and 40 thousand square metres dedicated to the village services.
But surely the most innovative solution is represented by the walkway which links the area to the Lingotto centre through the Olympic Arch and reunites two parts of the city that have always been divided by the railway barrier. "With the delivery of this village - said Engineer Mimmo Arcidiacono, General Director of Agenzia Torino 2006 - we are finally closing the circle. This will be the heart of the Olympic event: in the village, the athletes will find a welcome which will stick in their memory like an image of Italy through Torino".
A team of eleven architects coordinated by Benedetto Camerana designed and constructed the structure by using the most advanced eco-compatibility and eco-sustainability criteria. It is a real city within the city, in which the housing dimensions are reproduced in a system of blocks and squares that interlinks with the colourful houses.
Once the Games are over, the Athletes' Village will be reconverted into a permanent residential complex, with houses for dwelling purposes and University halls of residence.
