The Organising Committee for the XX Olympic Winter Games - Torino 2006 (TOROC) has unveiled the Olympic cauldron for the Turin Games. The 57 metre high cauldron will be lit on 10 February 2006 during the Opening Ceremony of the Games and will protect and display the Olympic flame during the period of the Games. The cauldron also allows the host nation to express its culture, spirit and history.
Tension Of Sport
The Torino 2006 cauldron was designed by Pininfarina, who also designed the Torino 2006 Olympic torch. The creative process was guided by the desire to represent in a single object, the tension of the Olympic challenge. Five support columns will rise upwards with power and dignity, representing the values of the Olympic spirit. As it rises towards the sky, the tension of sports will generate a twist of pure energy that will be transformed immediately into the flame.
The Tallest In History
The Torino 2006 cauldron is reported to be the tallest cauldron in the history of the Olympic Games. Measuring 57 metres, the cauldron has three segments of 31, 15 and 11 metres respectively, which will tower out of the Olympic Stadium, which measures only 26 metres in height. Visible across the entire city, the cauldron will stand on five tubular structures with a diameter of 60cm that will rise in a circumference having a three metre diameter. A sixth central tube will start at the base and will arrive at the summit of the cauldron, widening in the last three metres in order to give the burners the space needed to produce the flame. The five outside tubes will twist in the final section and will be crossed by the central tube. The flame is expected to rise to a height of about four metres and will run on methane gas.
Torino 2006
The Olympic Winter Games will be held in Turin from 10 to 26 February 2006. The Winter Games comprise seven different sports and 15 different disciplines, which will be played out in eight different competition sites. Around 2,500 athletes, 650 judges and umpires and one million spectators are expected to participate in this 20th edition of the Winter Games.

Beijing Olympic baseball fields break ground

(Beijing, December 22, 2005) -- The groundbreaking ceremony for the Olympic baseball competition venue in 2008 was held at Beijing's Wukesong Culture and Sports Center this morning.
Located at the southwest corner of the center, the project includes two competition fields and a training field, with a total land surface of 12000 square meters and a seating capacity of 15000.
Today's groundbreaking ceremony was held also for the project of Wukesong Culture, Sports and Public Service Facility comprising an indoor natatorium, cinema, bank, post office and shopping center. With a land surface of 287000 square meters, it is an important auxiliary project able to meet the needs of the Olympic venues and residents in the area.
The two projects initiated today and the Wukesong Indoor Stadium which broke ground in March this year are major elements of the Wukesong Culture and Sports Center. As the largest Olympic venue in western Beijing, the center will host the basketball and baseball events during the 2008 Games.
After 2008, it will become a cultural, sports, recreational and shopping center of west Beijing.
Currently, work on the main concrete structure of Wukesong Indoor Stadium has been finished.
