Liu Jingmin stresses frugality and integrity in Olympic preparations
(BEIJING, Dec. 22, 2005) -- Vice Mayor of Beijing Liu Jingmin said the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (
BOCOG) has taken measures to prevent any corrupt practice in the
Olympic preparations.
Liu, also BOCOG executive vice-president, made the remarks in an interview with the Beijing Public Service Radio today.
Under the guidance of the central government on staging a frugal Olympics, the Beijing Municipal Government took the whole year of 2004 to review each and every Olympic project, making a great deal of modification of luxurious designs, and saving in any possible way when the function of the venues is guaranteed, Liu said.
The current construction of the venues is in accordance with the principle of frugality and BOCOG is able to deliver the venues of same scale at a much lower cost than that of Sydney's or Athens', Liu said.
While inquired about the anti-corruption issue, Liu noted that an integral system has been instituted to carry out the venue construction, as well as the routines of the organizing committee. He went on explaining the mechanism in detail.
When BOCOG was established on December 13, 2001, the Supervision Committee of Beijing Olympic Games was concurrently born, which involves the Supervision Ministry, the National Audit Office, the National People's Congress (NPC) and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) in fully supervising BOCOG's work.
BOCOG Audit and Supervision Department, which oversees the whole process of BOCOG's financial operations, is subordinated to the supervision committee.
The National Audit Office had recently dispatched a permanent working group to BOCOG, and is currently looking through its budget and implementation. BOCOG has also formulated and implemented dozens of internal systems in relation to the financial management, supervision, and audit to prevent any act of corruption.
