(BEIJING, Dec. 16, 2005) -- Vice Mayor of Beijing Liu Zhihua said the construction of Olympic projects, including the National Stadium and the National Aquatics Center, were progressing smoothly.
Liu made the remarks while addressing the issues of public concern on the Beijing Olympic preparations in an interview with the Beijing Public Service Radio this morning.
Beijing needs 31 competition venues and 41 training venues for the 26 out of a total of 28 Olympic sports. The other events, sailing and equestrian, will be held in Qingdao and Hong Kong respectively.
Construction of the Beijing Olympic venues has already entered the most intensive phase, and most of the projects will be finished in the second half of year 2007, Liu said. He stressed that the Games organizers have insisted on fulfilling the unified requirements on safety, quality, function, schedule, and cost in the course of the Olympic and related project construction.
Liu said the three Olympic concepts -- "Green Olympics, High-tech Olympics, and People's Olympics" -- have been incorporated in the constructions. Preliminary assessment of environmental impacts arising from each project was done before the inception of the project, and a number of environment-friendly technologies have been adopted in the construction of Olympic venues and the projects within the perimeter of the central Olympic area. With all these measures, the city will be able to deliver a clean Olympic area with beautiful sceneries.
In relation to the situation of the National Stadium and the National Aquatic Center, dubbed "bird's nest" and "water cube" respectively, Liu said their construction is well underway. The main concrete structure of the bird's nest was completed last November, followed by the installation of outer steel beams. The construction of the concrete structure of the water cube was recently brought to an end, and that of its outer facade has been continuing.
The local authority has organized a panel of experts of all fields to evaluate and supervise the constructions to ensure all projects strictly follow the safety standards, Liu said. He added that the public may be allowed to tour the Olympic venues prior to the opening of the 2008 Olympiad.

(Beijing, December 16) -- The 62nd executive board meeting of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) was held in Beijing today.
The meeting noted that 2006 is the key year to decide the framework of operation and management of competition venues for the Olympic Games in 2008. The organizing work of venue operations includes the draw-up of operation plan, allocation of resources, provision of logistics, and assistance to international sports federations (IFs) in the arrangement of events.
The meeting pointed out that venue operation of the Beijing Olympiad should focus on the principle of involving local authorities in the management of operations where the venues are located and on the cultivation of managing teams. Efforts should be made to better serve the Games, spectators and the media. The organizing work should be people-oriented and pay attention to the quality of service. Security and emergency management should be key responsibilities.
The meeting called for the early set-up of managing teams as well as the enhancement of their professional and foreign language training to make venue operations satisfactory to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the IFs, athletes, spectators and the media.
The meeting decided that the third plenary session of BOCOG will be held early next year.
The meeting was presided over by Liu Qi, member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Secretary of the Beijing Municipal Committee of CPC and President of BOCOG. Present at the meeting was Chen Zhili, State Councilor and BOCOG Fist Vice-President.
